What Is a Facelift?

Also referred to as a rhytidectomy, a facelift is a procedure that is recommended for tightening and toning the lower to mid-facial area and is suggested for eliminating sagging skin and jowls. Therefore, the surgery is designed to tighten the facial muscles and eliminate excess fat to provide a more aesthetic or youthful appearance.

How Are Facelifts Performed?

When undergoing a facelift, either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is administered. An incision for a traditional facelift is made along the hairline between each temple and continues beside each ear. Once the incision is made, the doctor will lift the facial muscles and reposition the deeper facial layers of the skin. Any excess skin is then removed or trimmed and the incisions are sutured shut.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

You’re a good candidate for a facelift if you’re in good or excellent health and have realistic expectations about the procedure.

What Is Involved in the Healing Process?

After rhytidectomy or facelift surgery, the head is bandaged, and dressings are placed at the incision sites. The dressings and bandage will be worn for a period of a couple of days. You’ll need to make sure to keep the bandage dry as well. During the healing process, you’ll be required to keep your head elevated and take pain medication to alleviate any discomfort. Sutures are removed after about ten days’ time.

The total recovery process takes about two weeks, during which time you’ll need to refrain from participating in more strenuous activities. Scars from incisions generally fade after a year’s time although your hair should adequately cover the marks.

What Are the Typical Results of a Facelift?

A facelift is designed to rejuvenate the lower two thirds of the face, and, therefore, makes the facial skin look more vibrant, toned, and youthful. While you’ll experience some swelling or bruising immediately following the procedure, you’ll start appreciating visible results in just under a month’s time. Facelifts can last up to fifteen years, depending on the extent of the procedure.
