What Is a Male Breast Reduction Procedure (Gynecomastia Repair)?
Male breast reduction surgery, also referred to as gynecomastia repair, is recommended for older teen boys or men who suffer from an enlarged breast as the result of the condition called gynecomastia. While the disorder is frequently attributed to an accumulation of fat, it actually results from enlargement of the tissues in the breast. Often seen in adolescents, the condition usually dissipates after time. However, for some males the tissue remains, thereby making them feel embarrassed or too self-conscious to enjoy certain social activities, such as swimming or sports.
How Is a Male Breast Reduction Procedure Performed?
Patients undergoing breast reduction surgery are given general anesthesia. Afterward, the doctor makes a small incision in the area of the breast around the nipple area or the areola. Other incisions may be required if liposuction is indicated. Otherwise, the excessive breast tissue is removed at the primary incision site. Typically, the procedure takes one and a half hours. However, if liposuction is performed as well, the surgery may last as long as two to two and a half hours overall.
Am I a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery?
Good candidates for a male breast reduction procedure are generally older teen boys or men who have experienced gynecomastia for a while. Patients should be in good to excellent health in order to undergo the procedure.
What Is Involved in the Healing Process?
Patients usually spend about 30 minutes in the recovery area following the procedure. A supportive garment is also worn during the healing process for about two weeks. The doctor will usually prescribe a pain reliever to alleviate any discomfort. You can resume everyday activities or return to work after about four days. However, any kind of strenuous exercise should be avoided during the month following your surgery. Only moderate physical activities, such as walking, should be pursued during the healing process.
What Are the Typical Results of a Male Breast Reduction Procedure?
Because gynecomastia can be humiliating or embarrassing, patients report that they feel much more self-confident after the surgery is performed. For instance, they can participate in sports or other activities and don’t have to feel self-conscious about removing their shirt.
When you set up a consultation, all details about the surgery as well as the expenses will be covered at that time. As each patient’s needs are different, surgical costs can vary as well.
