What Is Liposuction?

Also known as lipoplasty, liposuction is a procedure that eliminates fatty deposits in such areas as the upper arm, abdomen, flanks, back, hips, thighs, around the breast, and beneath the chin. The surgical procedure is designed to enhance contouring by removing fat cells situated beneath the skin. A suction tube, called a cannula, made of stainless steel is used. Linked to a suction pump, the tube extracts fat cells by creating tunnels through the layers of fat between the muscles and the dermis.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is performed by using a combination of two techniques: tumescent liposuction and power-assisted lipoplasty. When both of these methods are used, the patient experiences a faster recovery time as well as less bruising.

Prior to the surgery, the doctor will mark the areas that will be treated. General anesthesia is administered before the procedure takes place. The amount of time you will remain in surgery will depend on the number of areas that are treated. Generally, lipoplasty takes about two to three hours to perform.

In the case of tumescent liposuction, a local anesthetic along with a capillary constrictor is injected into the fatty areas at each of the marked sites. This kind of liposuction treatment is used to treat such body areas as the neck, stomach, hips, buttocks, outer thighs, legs, and knees. Also referred to as liposculpture, tumescent liposuction is performed more often than any other cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S.

While all liposuction procedures are basically alike with respect to placing the incisions and suctioning, the techniques that are used to break down or dilute the fat cells differ. Therefore, tumescent liposuction is different from other procedures as it uses a larger amount of wetting solution to dilute the fatty cells. Again, this method is preferred, when used in combination with power-assisted lipoplasty since it lessens the incidence of bruising or bleeding.

Once an incision is made, the doctor inserts the cannula or suction tube beneath the skin to suction the fat. Smaller incisions can be used when using this kind of tube, thereby reducing the appearance of any resulting scars.

Am I a Good Liposuction Candidate?

People who are good candidates for liposuction procedures are in good health and of a normal weight. They generally are unable to get rid of localized fat by dieting or exercise alone.

What Is Involved in the Healing Process?

Lipoplasty or suction lipectomy is performed on an outpatient basis. Plan to have someone drive you home after the surgery as you’ll feel rather disoriented after the procedure is done. Patients can resume normal work activities approximately a week after the surgery. Regular exercise can also be resumed in about three to four weeks.

During the surgery, a girdle or compression-type garment is placed on the patient. This supportive garment must be worn, on average, for about a month. Significant swelling or bruising will usually dissipate after three to four weeks. Pain relievers will be prescribed to reduce any discomfort.

What Are the Typical Results of Liposuction?

Generally, you’ll see final results by the third month after completion of the procedure. As long as you follow a healthy menu plan and a regular regimen of exercise, the results of your liposuction surgery will enable you to display a well-toned and sleeker body.
