What Is a Lower Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy)?

A lower body lift, also known as a belt lipectomy, is a procedure that is designed to remove and tighten sagging and loose skin in the lower part of the body, including the abdomen, flanks, lower back, the outer and front areas of the thighs, and the buttocks and hips. Folds or loose skin and underlying fat deposits in these spots are removed during the surgery.

If a tummy tuck procedure is done at the same time, then the procedure can be extended to tone and tighten the inner part of the thighs. Often, a lower body lift is used to improve the appearance of sagging skin which has developed from excessive weight loss or as the result of bariatric surgery.

Therefore, a lower body lift is helpful for people who exhibit an excess of sagging skin that cannot be toned or tightened through regular diet and exercise. In people who have experienced significant weight loss, not treating the problem can lead to health issues, such as infection or even limited mobility.

How Is a Lower Body Lift Performed?

When performing a lower body lift, the doctor starts by placing an incision in the lower back and extending it around to the lower abdomen, so the excess skin can be trimmed and removed from the abdomen, flanks, hips, and outer and anterior areas of the thighs. Then the remaining skin is pulled up accordingly. In many cases, liposuction is performed simultaneously so better toning can be achieved. Support sutures are placed within the deeper layers of the skin.

Lower body lift procedures are performed using a general anesthesia and normally require a 48-hour hospital stay. Surgery time is dependent on the areas being lifted.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lower Body Lift Surgery?

You are a good candidate for lower body lift surgery if you exhibit loose skin in the areas of the abdomen, buttocks, posterior thighs, hips, outer thighs, or anterior thighs. Again, patients who have undergone bariatric surgery or who have lost a large amount of weight often are good candidates.

To realize success in the outcome, you must stay committed to a sensible plan of eating and exercise. Healthy patients whose weight has been stable for a minimum of a year are the best candidates.

What Is Involved in the Healing Process?

After the surgery, bandages and dressings are placed at the incision sites. The dressings are usually taken off after 48 hours. Tubes are also frequently used underneath the skin to collect any fluid drainage. At the onset, pain medications are either administered intravenously or intramuscularly with oral medicines dispensed later in the recovery process.

Generally, a special diet is followed, and a compression garment is worn to encourage fluid drainage and to lessen swelling. Swelling usually goes down after 90 days. You can resume routine activities approximately a month after the procedure. Walking is also encouraged after recovery.

What Are the Typical Results?

As long as you follow a sensible eating plan and exercise schedule, the results of a lower body lift will be long-lasting. Although the passage of time and age will reduce some firmness and muscle tone, patients are generally very satisfied with the results.

Procedure Costs

When you set up a consultation, all details about the surgery as well as the expenses will be covered at that time. As each patient’s needs are different, surgical costs can vary as well.  Insurance may cover a lower body lift if specific coverage criteria are met.
