What Is a Thigh Lift Procedure?
A thigh lift, also referred to as thighplasty, is a procedure that is recommended for reshaping or contouring the thighs and removing excess skin or fat on the inner or outer thighs. Therefore, the surgery is undertaken to slim the inner and outer thighs as well as give this area of the body a more youthful and toned appearance.
How Is a Thigh Lift Performed?
Usually a thigh lift or thighplasty is performed on an outpatient basis and under general anesthesia. The incisions the doctor uses will differ based on the extent of the correction and the specific treatment areas. Commonly, incisions are placed in the area of the groin and proceed down and around the junction of the lower buttock and upper back thigh. After the incision is made, the surgeon tightens the tissue underneath and removes and redrapes the skin.
For a medial thigh lift, an incision is placed at the juncture of the pubic area and the thigh. Excess skin is removed, and the area sutured, all of which leads to better elasticity and tone. For a lateral thigh lift, an incision is made on the top part of the thigh before the excess skin is removed, pulled up, and reattached. By using this surgical method, the skin of the thigh becomes tighter on both sides of the leg. Post-bariatric surgery patients find that a thigh lift is helpful in removing the sagging skin that is produced after a substantial loss of weight.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Thigh Lift or Thighplasty?
You’re a good candidate for thighplasty if you are unable to achieve firmer and smoother thighs through weight loss and diet alone. Generally, individuals who opt for thighplasty exhibit extra skin along the areas of the inner or outer thigh. They are also committed to following a healthy plan of regular diet and exercise, generally do not smoke and have maintained their current weight for at least a year. They should also have realistic expectations about the results that can be achieved from the surgery.
What Is Involved in the Healing Process?
After the thigh lift procedure, bandages and dressings are placed on the incisions. Generally, a compression garment is worn to reduce swelling and support healing. In some cases, tubes may be placed beneath the skin to collect any fluid or blood drainage. The sutures used to close the incisions typically dissolve after three months. Any sutures that need to be removed are taken out about two weeks after the surgery. Plan to have someone drive you home after the procedure and on obtaining assistance for a few days while you’re recuperating.
Generally, you’ll need to request time off work for a period of ten days to adequately heal. Any swelling or bruising usually dissipates after about a month. All in all, most thigh lift patients fully resume routine activities after about four months.
What Are the Typical Results?
The results from a thigh lift are immediately apparent. Nevertheless, it will take up to three months for you to see the final outcome of your surgery. Some of the scarring will fade with time or become hardly noticeable after about a year. If you maintain a healthy diet and follow a routine plan of exercise, you’ll see long-lasting, permanent results. While your thighs will lose some of their tone as you age, you still will continue to enjoy thinner and firmer thighs.
When you set up a consultation, all details about the surgery as well as the expenses will be covered at that time. As each patient’s needs are different, surgical costs can vary as well. In more severe cases, insurance may cover a thigh lift if specific coverage criteria are met.
