What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, removes excess fatty tissue and skin and contours the stomach area, thereby making the stomach tighter, more toned, and firmer. This procedure is often indicated for people who have undergone bariatric surgery, and women who have undergone pregnancy, and is therefore used to remove loose skin that often causes sagging and a lack of muscle tone.
To realize good results, it’s important that you follow the nutritional guidelines and diet that are recommended for you after bariatric surgery. You will achieve long-term, successful results as long as you maintain a healthy diet and eating plan.
How Is a Tummy Tuck Procedure Performed?
A tummy tuck necessitates full sedation and lasts, on average, about three hours. Should you undergo another procedure at the same time as the tummy tuck, then you’ll need to include the procedure time for that operation as well.
Before a tummy tuck is performed, the surgeon will mark your stomach area with a pen to note the incision site, which is usually located on the lower abdomen between the hipbones.
After the surgeon makes the incision, the skin is moved away and up toward the rib area. The muscles in the abdominal area are secured and sewn, any additional tissue is removed, and tubes are inserted to catch any collection of fluids. Then the skin is repositioned over the abdomen before being attached again at the incision site. A girdle is placed on the patient for the purposes of compression and releasing the collected fluids after the surgery.
Good Tummy Tuck Candidates
Any post-bariatric patient is a good candidate for a tummy tuck, provided they are healthy, stable at their ideal weight for the past 12 months and are committed to following a sensible and nutritional diet and exercise plan. If you want to get rid of loose or sagging skin and obtain a tighter and firmer stomach, then undergoing a tummy tuck procedure is a positive move. The tummy tuck procedure is also recommended for women who wish to tone their stomach following pregnancy and do not plan on having more children.
After a tummy tuck procedure, you’ll spend the night in recovery before being discharged the next day. The aforementioned tubes that were placed beneath the skin at the time of the procedure will be detached after two to four days. The surgical girdle should be worn for about a month.
Patients are recommended not to return to work or a regular routine for about two weeks following a tummy tuck procedure. Sutures dissolve after about four weeks and most people can take part in a moderate exercise regimen, such as walking, about three weeks after the surgery.
Tummy Tuck Results
Tummy tuck results are permanent and successful as long as you eat sensibly and exercise regularly. A tummy tuck will tighten your abs, so you no longer see any of that former loose, unsightly skin that can occur after weight loss or pregnancy.
When you set up a consultation, all details about the surgery as well as the expenses will be covered at that time. As each patient’s needs are different, surgical costs can vary as well.
